Overview
This scholarship is available to North Dakota high school seniors who are direct descendants of U.S. military veterans who served honorably. It funds post–high school study only. Individual awards may be up to $2,000. Applications must be received by April 1st.
Eligibility
- Legal resident of North Dakota
- Current high school senior
- Direct descendant of a veteran who served honorably in the United States military
- Intended use: post–high school education (college, university, or other accredited post‑secondary study)
Award
- Maximum award per recipient: $2,000
Application requirements
- Proof of the veteran’s military service (DD Form 214 is preferred). Please redact sensitive information such as Social Security numbers. Note: photos of cemetery headstones do not qualify as acceptable proof of service.
- FAFSA SAI documentation (provide your Student Aid Index information and supporting paperwork).
- A typed essay, maximum 500 words, addressing the following prompt: How does North Dakota’s government support civic engagement and education among its residents, and what role do veterans play in promoting these values within the community?
- Evidence of acceptance to an accredited institution of higher education (acceptance letter or official notice).
Submission and deadline
- Complete applications must be received at American Legion National Headquarters no later than April 1st of the application year.
