ELIGIBILITY / LIMITATIONS
Intro: Participation in ISEF is governed by the following eligibility rules and restrictions. All requirements below must be met by students and projects submitted through ISEF-affiliated fairs.
1. Each ISEF-affiliated fair may send to ISEF the number of projects assigned and committed to in its affiliation agreement.
2. Student eligibility:
a. Must be in grades 9–12 (or the equivalent).
b. Must not have reached their 20th birthday on or before May 1 preceding ISEF.
3. English is the official language of ISEF. Project display boards and abstracts must be presented in English.
4. Each student may enter only one project. That project’s research may span no more than 12 consecutive months and may not include work performed prior to January 2025.
5. Team projects are limited to a maximum of three members. Any team advancing to ISEF must be composed of the same members who competed at the ISEF-affiliated fair and every team member must satisfy ISEF eligibility requirements.
6. A student may compete in only one ISEF-affiliated fair, except when advancing from an affiliated regional fair to a state or national fair that is affiliated with ISEF.
7. Projects that are purely demonstrations, literature reviews, library research, informational displays, or explanation models are not considered appropriate for ISEF competition.
8. Artificial intelligence tools may be used as a research resource, but their use must be cited and acknowledged. All materials the student presents must be written and expressed in the researcher’s own words.
9. ISEF accepts projects across all science and engineering fields. Entries are placed into one of the 22 official categories (including subcategories); consult the full list of categories and definitions for guidance.
10. A student’s project may be part of a larger professional study, but the poster, abstract, and presentation at ISEF must represent only the student’s own portion of the overall research.
