Rise Above Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Silberman & Lam LLP
Silberman & Lam LLP believes a strong workplace builds character, community, and professional growth. As a firm focused on Workers’ Compensation law, we represent everyday employees and regularly identify situations where employers take unfair advantage of workers. Because many people don’t fully understand their employment rights, supervisors and executives can sometimes exploit employees’ time and effort. To encourage conversations about those experiences and to empower future employees, we created the Rise Above Scholarship.
Purpose
We invite students from across the country to tell a story about a time they felt taken advantage of as an employee, intern, or group member. We want to know how that situation influenced your relationships with colleagues or supervisors, whether it changed how you spot warning signs in future work, and how the experience ultimately led to positive growth or learning.
Who may apply
- Open to current U.S. legal residents living in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia who are enrolled in a vocational program or a two- to four‑year postsecondary institution. Eligible applicants include high school seniors, vocational students, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
- Individuals employed by Silberman & Lam LLP, their immediate family members (parents, children, siblings, spouses), and anyone who shares a household with those employees (regardless of relation) are not eligible.
- Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Application components
- Essay: A 750–1,000-word personal essay addressing the prompt: Describe an occasion when you felt taken advantage of as an employee, intern, or group member. Explain how the incident affected your professional relationships with those involved. Has the experience changed how you identify employment red flags? In what ways did this negative situation become a positive one over time, and what lessons did you take away?
- Originality: All essays will be screened for AI-generated content. Submissions found to contain AI-written material will be disqualified.
- Résumé: Include a current, professional résumé outlining academic and work-related experience.
- Transcript/proof of enrollment: Provide a transcript from your current school. First-year college students, graduate students, and recent transfers may submit an unofficial transcript from their present institution plus the most recent official transcript from their prior school.
