Overview
Four scholarships of $2,000 each are awarded annually by the Friends of Volo Bog: two for students entering college to study environmental or natural sciences, and two for students already enrolled in college who are pursuing an environmental or natural science degree.
Eligibility
- Entering college applicants:
- Must be a permanent Illinois resident.
- Must attend high school in one of these counties: Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, or Will.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for the first three years of high school.
- Must plan to enroll in a college or university and intend to pursue an environmental- or nature-related field.
- Continuing college applicants:
- Must be currently enrolled in a college or university in an environmental- or nature-related program.
- Must maintain a permanent residence in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, or Will County.
- Must have a minimum college GPA of 3.0.
Deadline and availability
- Application materials are accepted beginning January 1 each year.
- Application forms and the recommendation letter form will be available here in late December.
- Completed applications must be received electronically by March 31.
Required application packet (all items must be included)
1. A fully completed application form.
2. At least one signed recommendation letter from a non-relative; preferably a faculty member with a science or natural science background who knows your goals and abilities.
3. An essay describing your reasons for choosing an environmental or natural science career, relevant experience and strengths, related activities and plans, and your educational objectives.
4. Official, current transcripts confirming a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Transcripts must be sent directly from the school or via Parchment.
- If mailed, transcripts must be in a separate, school‑sealed envelope addressed to:

Submission notes
- All application components must be submitted electronically by the March 31 deadline unless an item (like a mailed transcript) is sent in the required sealed format as noted above.
